As known through the modern history nationally and internationally, the popular American culture is one of those new-adapted-founded cultures that includes aspects and ways of life of everyone in society including their attitudes, habits, actions the way they act, the food they eat and the clothes they wear, the buildings they design, traditions, habits, actions, faiths, politics, arts, sports, music (Wilson & Wilson 2001).
To some people, the description of the popular America culture remains wide and open since it’s the way of life that all Americans adapt and create which includes the world we’re living in. Personally, to me popular American culture was limited to the right things that I have learned throughout my life from my Arabic and Islamic culture. Since popular American culture became a big trend after music and media became more famous, big part of my inventory had to do with those two categories.
For example, in the past a few days I have looked through those patterns that had an effect and was adopted by Americans to be part of what represented us in-front of the international community. One of those patterns was soft rock music in which I have recorded while listening to KOST 103. 5 FM the channel of soft rock. While searching through the history of this type of music in addition to other types of rock music, I found that they have started in the 1960’s when the American culture adopted it to be as one of the most recognized types of music.
Another trend I have added to my list was when I walked in the mall and saw the Victoria Secret store and the fashion that was displayed outside, Victoria secret and other types of stores added their impact into the popular American culture in the 1990s’ by making their own fashion show which dragged over 1. 5 million viewers to show their interest. While still walking in the mall, I noticed that many of the stores had the urban look in their fashion dolls which contained the baggy pants, long shirt, baseball hat and long chain.
As a world traveler, every country I have been through always knew that the American look was supposed to be like that, when people tried to dress like Americans you would find them wearing a baggy pants with boxers, baseball hat, long baggy shirt, big chain and Nike shoes. This fashion trend reminded me that it was known between the urban areas and still is until our time, but isn’t adapted and worn by every single American which agrees with the description that says American popular culture is for every single person in this country. Not far from fashion, media as I entioned earlier was part of my list in which was built according to what I have seen in the past a few days. Media and the categories that goes under it from music to shows to movies and news, has big affect on the pop American culture; even if people in here doesn’t really pay big attention to those affects and changes, people around the world still connect the American culture to those categories that falls under media. For example, when I went to Palestine, I got a job as a program producer and host in one of the most known TV and radio stations in Palestine called Radio Amwaj TV and Radio station.
Just for the fact that I’m an American, they have given me the job because of my resume that explained my previous experience in my school radio station. Without any references, or background checks I have got the job on the spot. This job and many others are usually given to Americans before they are offered to Palestinians because of the fact that Americans have the experience more than Palestinians does, Americans get to watch the shows and know how they’re run, Americans get more people to listen to and love more than Palestinians so in that way they get more viewers.
Although I was disgusted from this idea, I haven’t complained because I got a job there while I was visiting for a year. This story was mentioned simply because I wanted to show that the international community recognizes Americans to be the finders of the media and they connect media and television to be part of the popular American culture.
While going through the 10 freeway, every single exit I past had a fast food restaurant which reminded that Palestinians do connect fast food restaurants to the American culture which brought up to my attention an incident that happened in Palestine around the 1991 war in Iraq, when that happened, we had some restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, Checkers and some other restaurants that were franchised for American companies.
Once the war started, angry Palestinians burned down all of those restaurants in the intention of destroying the American economy so they can force all of the Americans to leave the Middle East. Back then, people had different ideas about Americans especially that the media only showed part of the truth and showed the American culture as a different ridiculous one.
Now a day those ideas has changed and people became more open to accept Americans especially after the part that president Bill Clinton played to put the peace into effect in Palestine. Those trends always have their impact in the popular culture especially their relation with our wealth by having everything that takes people’s money to make them look more Americanized, or more modern, by selling every new trend to help others look like actors, singers, models and famous people.
Pleasure is also part of the values that’s being connected to the popular American culture in the eating, fashion, wealth categories. Finally, other trends such as music, movies, religions, and many other lists I have added that I thought had a big part to change the popular American culture, but I chose to write about the ones I have mentioned earlier because of their relation with my international experience and my experience around the world.
Those values have impacted my personal decision making because I have lived through those values every single day of my life whether in America or in Europe and the Middle East. I consider myself aware of the influence that this popular culture on my decision especially that I am considering this culture to be popular because of those aspects from the way I was taught about them.
To me I have been influenced in many ways throughout the years and in many locations because of the fact that I have come from a different culture and religion and that my schools, media and communities in here have taught me about the things that makes me American.
