Fullers text States that in order to achieve freedom in America, we must overcome the barriers of race, religion, and gender. Back in the 19th century, women did not have equal rights as men. Women were not able to receive equal educational opportunities. For one reason, men didn’t want women to have self-dependence. Women were expected to be dependent on their husband. Moreover, education was a luxury during the 19th century, so many men were not able to receive a descent education.

Men had the obligation to be better than their wives, so it would’ve been difficult for a women to find a husband if she had a high educational background. It would be considered as an insult fifth wife had a higher education than her husband. On top of that, there were no universities that existed for women at that time. Fuller strongly disagrees that women have to be dependent on her husband. They have the right and opportunity to make their own decisions in their life. Many people have criticized that not many women could’ve stand up and speak for their rights like Fuller. Through her writings, she wanted to encourage women to get up and strive for equal opportunities. This will enlighten the American future to pursue true freedom. Liberty is relatively a new word in the English vocabulary. It was introduced recently in the United States constitution. When we look back in history, our human society has been harsh and cruel. People were governed by slavery and collectivism for a long period of time, and it still exists today in different forms.

Fuller believes that independence of the self is the driving Orca of our nation. Unlike Europe, America is a nation that is seeking for development and revolution. America has been continuously growing, and Fuller predicted that there will be a time when society will accept each and every individuals. Fuller also criticizes about the relationship between men and women. In her arguments, she States that marriage COUld be both a positive and a negative thing. The consequence of marriage for women is that they have to give herself up to the husband. It is just like there is no freedom.

She strongly disagrees women being labeled as a belonging or a possession. Because Fuller grew up in the 19th century, she has seen many gender inequality. Most of the women living at that period of time were not socially accepted to speak up their minds about political issues. However, Fuller had the courage to strive against the social norms, and wrote about a variety of topics relating to religion, politics, and gender identity. Fuller was rather fortune, since she was able to receive a descent education, and she was taught how to read and write by her father.

Most women in her time did not have the courage and confidence to speak up like Fuller. Fuller was truly the iris feminist leader in America. In the first part of her text, it says: “This great suit has now been carried on through many ages, with various results. The decisions have been numerous, but always followed by appeals to still higher courts. ” When Fuller states that ‘ ‘This great suit has now been carried on through ages,” she clearly wanted to state that gender issue is one of the serious social issue in our human society.

In her text, she wanted to make a difference, and let her male counter parts understand how hardships women are going through. “He feels himself called to understand and aid nature, that he may, through his intelligence, be raised and interpreted; to be a student of, and servant to, the universe-spirit; and only king of his planet, that, as an angelic minister, he may bring it into conscious harmony with the law of that spirit. ” Fuller states that men think act that they know everything. Men believe that they possess power over everything in the universe, including nature, spirits, and women. Society has shaped this belief for a long time. Such is the inheritance of the orphan prince, and the illegitimate children of his family will not always be able to keep it from him, for, from the fields which hey sow with dragon’s teeth, and water With blood, rise monsters, which he alone has power to drive away. ” This passage shows how selfish men could be, driven with his egos. Men’s decision can neglect his family, including his sons and daughters. “Then it is the prediction, that to learn and to do, all men must be lovers, and Orpheus was, in a high sense, a lover. His soul went forth towards all beings, yet could remain sternly faithful to a chosen type of excellence.

Seeking what he loved, he feared not death nor hell, neither could any presence daunt his faith in the power of the celestial harmony that filled is soul. GE like blood, monsters, and dragons. ” We could interpret from this paragraph that men has a strong gender role as well. Men should be fearless of death nor hell. Should have inner peace within his soul, and strong enough to protect his families and lovers. Men has been highly valued in human society, because of their strong gender role. Not only does Fuller criticize about men, but at the same time she also appreciates men’s well-being.

She sends out a message that women truly appreciate men for being responsible, faithful, and protective to their family. She wants men to also appreciate the same way to women. Religion, specifically Christianity was a huge factor In gender roles. In her essay, she included many passages that mentioned Christianity. One of her passage goes like this: “Yet, in this country, as by the Jews, when Moses was leading them to the promised-land, everything has been done that inherited depravity could, to hinder the promise of heaven from its fulfillment.

The cross, here as elsewhere, has been planted only to be blasphemed by cruelty and fraud. ” This illustrates that what men do in their actions, contradicts the bible. In other words, men are hypocrites. God has promised eternal life for men. But Fuller argues “What about women, and all the other people who are not white? ” She has a strong argument stating that men are all hypocrites, and are sinners. She uses logical reasons to this, by using the bible and the church as her reference. Fuller illustrates in her texts that hypocrisy is the biggest sin.

In her text, she also inserts a typical argument between men and women. Fuller states that men and women have a difficult time understanding each other. Men tend to think that they are in charge of every decision, and women do not like the feeling of being possessed by their husband. Fuller states that women are smart enough just eke men to think and make decisions as well. Women have the right to receive education and make important decisions, just like men. Fuller also describes that gender discrimination is equivalent to slavery.

In her texts she also includes the issues of racial discrimination. The early 1 9th century was a dynamic period in America’s history. Many events occurred during this time, and different people stood up for equal rights. Fuller was also an abolitionist, who supported all the people in America who were going through hardships. Fuller tries to make an inter-related connection between men and women. Men can exist because of women. In fact, men and women are always supporting each other, and cannot exist without the other. This concept is similar to the ‘Yin-and-yang’ in Asian cultural beliefs.

Fuller made a clear point that men are men because of the sake of women. From her passages, we can see that Fuller is a straight-forward confident person. She does not have any hesitation to state what she believes in what is right or wrong. It is very interesting because women were commonly taught to be quiet and not speak her mind clearly. Fuller went against the social norms, and fought as an individual. According to her passage, shaping ones individual can be the elution to these inequalities that exist today. Fuller uses a variety of ethos and logos in her arguments.

Her arguments are in fact very logical, and seems like she had many experience in the past. She also uses a variety of anaphora in her text. She constantly repeats the same verse over and over. This leaves a stronger impression in our minds when reading this text. She made her text sounds like a protest. Because women hesitated to speak out their mind in the 19th century, Fuller took the lead and wrote their voices in the passages. In conclusion, Fuller’s text has made the first step to woman movement in America’s history. With no previous examples, Fuller was brave enough to step up and speak out her mind.
